Preparation Is Invisible Presence
Great interviewers prepare exhaustively — but their preparation is designed to make them present, not performative. The goal of research is not to demonstrate knowledge. It is to earn enough trust that the subject can speak freely. When a subject senses that you already understand their work deeply, they stop explaining and start exploring.
The Best Questions Are Observations
The most productive interview questions are often not questions at all. They are observations that invite a response: “It seems like there was a pivot somewhere around 2018.” “That reads as if it was the most painful decision you made.” These observations require the subject to confirm, correct, or complicate — and that friction generates the most interesting responses.
