The Science of Reading: Why Long-Form Still Dominates Deep Engagement

Conventional wisdom holds that the internet has destroyed human attention. Short videos, tweet threads, and TikTok have supposedly trained audiences to consume only fragments. The data tells a more complicated story.

Depth Correlates with Loyalty

Content analytics consistently show that readers who finish long-form pieces have dramatically higher return rates, higher subscription conversion, and higher social sharing behaviour than readers who skim short posts. Depth and loyalty are correlated. The readers you most want are the ones who will stay with 2,000 words.

The Dual Audience Problem

The confusion arises because there are two entirely different audiences: browsers and readers. Browsers account for the majority of page views but a minority of value. Readers are fewer but account for the vast majority of subscriptions, purchases, and recommendations. Most content metrics optimise for browsers. The smart strategy optimises for readers.
