Not when inspiration strikes, but on a fixed schedule. Professional writers write on Tuesdays at 8am whether they feel like it or not. Inspiration, it turns out, is far more likely to arrive if it knows where to find you.<\/p>\n<h2>Finish Everything<\/h2>\n<p>The second discipline is finishing. Many writers accumulate hundreds of good beginnings and almost no endings. Finishing a piece \u2014 even an imperfect one \u2014 builds the muscle memory of completion. Each finished piece also teaches you things that no incomplete draft can.<\/p>\n<h2>Edit Ruthlessly<\/h2>\n<p>The third discipline is editing. First drafts are never for readers. They are for discovery. Real writing happens in revision \u2014 cutting the weak passages, strengthening the structure, clarifying the central argument until it is undeniable.
