Exceptional writers use editing for something far more ambitious: clarifying what they actually think.<\/p>\n<h2>Write First, Think Later<\/h2>\n<p>The first draft is a thinking tool, not a communication tool. Its purpose is to discover what you have to say, not to say it well. The writers who produce the clearest prose are usually those who are most willing to throw away their first drafts entirely \u2014 to treat discovery and communication as separate phases that require different cognitive modes.<\/p>\n<h2>The One-Sentence Test<\/h2>\n<p>Before finalising any piece, ask: what is the one sentence this entire piece is trying to say? If you cannot answer in one clear sentence, the piece is not ready. Not because it needs more writing \u2014 it probably needs less.
